I was at the Craft Beer Cellar in Clayton, MO to find some new beers. We picked up a mix-six of beers we have not had before. Well, mostly not had before. One of the bottles was an Imperial IPA called Cloud Hopper from Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, KS. The ABV is 9.2%.
I poured it into a glass and took a whiff. There was hardly no aroma to it. What there was, was a bit piney. When I tasted it, there was more bitterness than anything. There was a very slight citrus taste but mostly piney. The aftertaste had some citrus to it but I was left with more bitter. They use Chinook, Columbus and Cascade hops in this beer. With an ABV of 9.2, I was expecting more alcohol taste but surprisingly there was barely any.
I was not very impressed with this beer. It was bitter but not very flavorful to me. Wifey liked it more than I did. I just felt that they went too bitter, just to go bitter. The low alcohol taste was a pleasant surprise thought. I would drink this again though. It is not bad at all, just not my cup of...ummm...tea...beer?
I give it 3 hop flowers.
